    Advanced Medical Issues

    This is an advanced, 2-day course on medical aspects of CPS practice meant to enhance the specialized skills necessary for CPS staff to better assess safety and risk to children.  It seeks to expand on the medical issues first introduced in the Common Core and CPS Response Training. 

     

    This course will expand upon and deepen caseworkers’ knowledge and skills in:

    • identifying medical indicators and their severity in relation to child abuse and neglect
    • evaluating consequences of various medical conditions and indicators related to parental ability to protect the child and follow through on treatment
    • working effectively with medical professionals in a child abuse and neglect investigation
    • conducting ongoing assessments of safety and risk based on the determined medical issues or needs of the children and family

     

    This training is open to all district CPS caseworkers, supervisors and managers who have completed the Child Protective Services Response Training or its equivalent.

    Psychotropic Medications & Their Use in the Treatment of Mental Health Issues in Youth

    Information

     

    Course Description: 

    More and more, DSS and voluntary agency caseworkers are confronted with many challenging circumstances for which questions about “BEST PRACTICE” surface.   This occurs frequently with respect to the treatment and case-management of youth in care who have mental health issues.   This one-day course will provide participants with BASIC knowledge about psychotropic medications and treatment implications so that they are able to support the child’s treatment plan and advocate for the child’s well-being on issues of mental health treatment.  As a result of this training, the participants will be better able to understand the role of psychotropic medication in the treatment of foster care youth, and to access more specific information regarding medication.  The specific course objectives are:

    Training for:  Local DSS child welfare staff, DJJOY staff and voluntary agency direct care staff, caseworkers, supervisors, case managers, administrators and health services staff
