Affinity groups at the Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare are spaces where students with a shared identity or experience come together to build community and engage in activities or programs related to social work.
Each group has a particular focus and is open to any student to join.
Description
The Marsha P. Johnson Legacy Affinity Group strives to create an inclusive and supportive community for LGBTQ+ students in the SSW.
We provide educational opportunities, social events, and a safe space for LGBTQ+ students and promote awareness, understanding, and advocacy on LGBTQ+ issues.

Our mission is to promote academic success, celebrate Black culture, and foster a sense of belonging within the SSW and the social work field.
We provide a safe space for students to connect, share experiences, and support each other. Additionally, we advocate for equity and inclusion in social work education and practice, offer resources and mentorship for professional growth, and engage in community outreach to promote social justice. Through these efforts, we strive to enhance the social work experience for Black students and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable social work community.

The Returning Learners and Parenting Student Success Circle is a supportive community dedicated to empowering individuals who are balancing their educational pursuits with parenting responsibilities.
Our group offers a platform for returning students and student-parents to connect, share resources, and support each other in achieving academic and personal success. Through workshops and collaborative activities, we aim to create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive in their dual roles as learners and parents.
