SSW Convocation and University Graduation Information
The graduating Class of 2018 consists of School of Social Welfare students who have completed or will complete degree requirements in December 2017, May 2018, July 2018, and August 2018. If you plan on attending the University and/or the School of Social Welfare ceremony, please complete the Ceremony Attendance/Registration form on the Solar System by 11:59 p.m. on May 6, 2018.


Caps and Gowns:  

Graduation gowns will be available on April 19, 2018 at Shop Red East (located on Level 2 of the HSC) and may be purchased up to the day of graduation.  If you are unable to pick up your attire on campus, please call (631) 632-6543. There is a shipping fee of $10.00.

Doctoral Rentals:  $146.00 (plus tax) Doctoral Candidate attire is now available to order. 

There is no greater expression of community at The School of Social Welfare than our commencement ceremony.  To recognize students at graduation that have -- through voluntary service, activism and advocacy, or other forms of civic engagement helped address or make positive change around a social issue,  we invite you to consider having your achievements recognized by the wearing of a Citrus Green-color cord at the commencement ceremony on May 18.  SSW students who have served in the military may wear a triple honor cord of red, white and blue if they choose to do so. 

Examples of service include, but are not limited to work with USWA, GSG, Advocacy Day, Leadership Symposium, Disaster Relief etc.

Cords vary in price from $4.00 -18.00 and can be purchased online at any vendor that sells graduation regalia.

  • Every graduating student will receive four (4) graduation announcements and tickets;
  • Each candidate must pick up his/her own tickets. If someone else is picking up your tickets, then they must present a signed note from you with a copy of your ID card;
  • You will forfeit your tickets if you fail to pick them up by 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 11, 2018 (Stony Brook campus) and Saturday, May 12, 2018 (Manhattan site)
  • Children sitting in a seat must have a ticket.  Please keep your tickets in a safe place because we cannot replace them.  

We wish to ensure that our convocation is an enjoyable and memorable occasion for all.  Please instruct your guests with small children to exit the ceremony if the child becomes restless or audibly upset.

Platform Party, Faculty, and Graduates assemble promptly for robing in Staller Center--Music Lobby, the entrance is to the left of the main Staller Center building (located on West Campus).  Signs will be posted to identify the robing area.  Please go directly to the robing area where volunteers will assist you.  You cannot leave anything in the Music Lobby, so please wear your robe to the location and leave your personal items with your family.

Guests Arrive 

There will be several graduation ceremonies in the Staller Center prior to the School of Social Welfare’s event. No one will be able to enter the Center until guests from the prior event exit the building.

Platform Party, Faculty, and Graduates process from the robing area into the Staller Center.

As you walk across the stage, you will receive a congratulatory letter from Dean Jacqueline Mondros. The University will forward your official diploma upon final certification of your degree requirements.


The ceremony will last approximately ninety (90) minutes. We will have a reception with light refreshments immediately following in the Staller Center Plaza or in case of rain, in the Wang Center Lobby.


Although parking is available in most parking lots, the most convenient one is the Administration parking garage. Specially marked buses to take guests to the Commencement areas from the parking lots will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Your degrees are officially conferred at the University Commencement Ceremony.  The Dean of the School of Social Welfare and the School of Social Welfare students will be asked to stand “en masse” while the President confers the degree.

Guest attendance at the University-wide commencement is limited.
