The School of Social Welfare will host its second annual Advocacy Action Day event on Thursday, April 6th, 2017, from 1 pm – 3 pm in the Health Sciences Center, Galleria on level 3. The theme of this year’s event is “Disability Justice Corner: Learn! Speak! Advocate!” and will feature several interactive stations which promote advocacy for disability justice. There will be a speaker’s corner for planned and spontaneous performance art, a comment wall for participants to share their thoughts and ideas, and a letter writing table where participants can write to their representatives advocating for or against specific legislation.

For almost two decades, Advocacy Day has helped promote a wide range of social justice issues including economic injustice, gender equality, and institutional racism. This year’s theme will continue the legacy. “Disability Justice Corner” will challenge individuals to confront the pervasive effects of ableism in our society and will demonstrate how community members can become involved with critical civic engagement.

The Advocacy Action Day Planning Committee, which is made up of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, alumni, and faculty, with input from representatives of several outside advocacy organizations, have organized this event to bring in those from the community in an interactive and collaborative way. All disciplines are encouraged to attend.
This event is free and open to the public. No reservation required. For more information, please contact Nikki Greco at Nikki.Greco@stonybrook.edu.
