Student Spotlight: Amanda Sanford

Amanda Sanford, MSW Candidate,'23
Running for Library Board- Patchogue Medford Library

Reason for running:

I was inspired to run for my district’s library board by two of my professors–Jessica Mitchell and Leah Topek-Walker. I have come to understand the importance of social workers’ involvement in the political sphere through the unwavering efforts of Jessica, and from Leah, I have learned how social work can be practiced in public spaces, and about the role that libraries can play in bridging gaps amongst social services. Running for office was never something that I had imagined for myself, but through my social work education and the guidance from my mentors, I have gained an understanding of the value that social workers can offer to elected positions. For me, a library board trustee position would provide an opportunity to combine many of my interests, and to participate in changemaking on more of a macro level.

Goals:

Through my endeavors as an MSW student, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with the Patchogue-Medford Library through my role as an intern. Both my studies as a social work student and my experiences as a library social work intern have provided me with a deeper appreciation of the work that the library does for the community. I am pursuing a seat on the Patchogue-Medford Library Board with the following goals in mind:

  • To continue to be a part of this work in a different capacity through a position on the Board of Trustees

  • To contribute to the wonderful work that is already being done by the Patchogue-Medford Library

  • To learn, in a hands-on way, how social work ethics and principles can be integrated into an elected position

  • To show other social workers and social work students that our presence within the political arena is not only possible, but necessary due to the unique skill-set we possess and the person-first perspective that we infuse into everything that we do
