The Tragedy in Uvalde, Texas: A Message from Dean Shari Miller

5/26/22

Dear SSW Community,

In our world that is rife with so many persistent, complex, and deeply rooted challenges, we're faced, more than daily, with images, stories, experiences of incredible tragedy, violence, pain, and loss. It's difficult to find words that carry enough meaning to have much resonance. But, it is also essential to acknowledge the kinds of losses and tragedies that are not only personally horrific and unthinkable for the loved ones of people directly affected, but are also those things social workers must think about, must take action to address with care, determination, advocacy, and in an effort to dismantle their underlying causes. So, our deepest thoughts and care go out to the families and loved ones of the children and adults who were violently murdered at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas yesterday. Our thoughts and care go out, though, with the acknowledgement that those thoughts must translate to action, to advocacy, toward the kind of policy change necessary to stem the flow of the ongoing senseless, tragic, violence in this country.

Please join me in moments of reflection for the lives of 19 children and 2 adults lost, for their loved ones, and also in solidarity with those who are also taking action to make change.
