To the Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare Community,
The faculty and I recognize that as social workers you are probably reacting to the outcome of the election. You are likely engaging in conversations with your family, friends, and neighbors, and we know that some of those conversations may be quite difficult.
As field instructors, adjunct faculty members, and alumni, students may turn to you with questions, thoughts, and emotions. Please know that the School’s faculty and our Field Office staff stand ready to help you process your responses.
We recognize that social workers will be needed now more than ever. We are a profession that was born of adversity, with relevant values, knowledge, and skills. We are a resilient profession and this is a teachable moment. With that in mind, the Faculty will begin facilitating student dialogues in our classrooms and informally in our lounge area outside the Dean’s Office. We formed a committee to plan Town Halls both on Long Island and in Manhattan that will help our students use their strengths and resilience in this new era. Please let us know if you would like to join these discussions. We will share more specific information in the coming days.
In the meanwhile, stay well and strong. There is much work to be done.
