Experience Nature, 2021

"Nature is an art which surrounds us at all times. Unfortunately, the art of nature is often overlooked in our society due to the fact that daily life can be very fast paced and stressful. This is especially true for college students who take many classes, have many assignments, and are struggling with finding their professional identity and path. Society’s pressures can generate stress, anxiety, depression, and other uncomfortable feelings for many. Know that you are not alone in experiencing these feelings, and that you are not stuck in these feelings either. It is scientifically proven that being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature generates positive feelings and increases physical and mental well-being. Immersion in nature is a multi sensory mindful experience which can be very calming, inspiring, healing, and soothing.
This project, ‘Experience Nature’, is meant to simulate the sensorial experience nature offers us, and bring forth the benefits nature has on overall wellbeing. It is also meant to promote mindfulness, and engage viewers in the present moment with the art of nature. This project engages the senses of smell, touch, sight, and hearing. There is dried lavender from my garden to smell. There are nature objects I collected at Avalon Nature Preserve in Stony Brook, NY to touch. There are paintings made using imprints of fall leaves for sight. There are two meditative nature based soundscapes using the sound of running water accompanied by instruments, an acoustic guitar and a synth. This is meant to bring an aspect of auditory music therapy to help create calmness as well. This also It is my hope that this project inspires people to immerse themselves in nature more often. Nature’s beauty and ability to heal is very powerful."
