The Collaborative for Student Success and Academic Wellness
Abstract
The Collaborative for Student Success and Academic Wellness (CSSAW) at Stony Brook University is an integrative mental health approach and an emerging model to support whole student development within higher education settings. The CSSAW utilizes social work student interns and social work field instruction as an approach for student success through a lens of academic well-being. Social work interns are trained in a 8-week program situated within their campus-based field placement that integrates the development of mind-body skills and contemplative practices as the foundation for academic wellness, self-care and collective care. A shared supervisory model is then utilized through the academic year as students assume the roles of academic success coaches, instructors, academic advisors, group and individual counselors, student outreach workers, researchers, and community organizers.
