The Manhattan Writing Center

Welcome, School of Social Welfare students and congratulations on embarking on your social work journey!

I’m Melissa Appel, melissa.appel@stonybrook.edu. We have been helping Manhattan students from the School of Social Welfare for several years with their academic papers.

New students often worry about how to learn to write in APA style. That’s why we have the Writing Center. I can go over some of the rules with you when you are not sure and encourage you to feel confident to write your papers. It’s just a format that you will need to use, and once you start using it, it will be second nature. Always use Perdue Owl Online Writing Lab as a resource, which will offer you detailed instructions of using APA: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html.

We do not just help with APA style formatting at The Writing Center. We also:

-work with you on your papers to ensure you are following rules of APA and grammar, and addressing the assignment in the best way possible

-help you with your research when you are stuck. Researching can be easy and fun- and make all the difference in your papers.

-help you choose topics and outline your paper before you start. This will help make your paper easier to write even though you need to spend a little more time planning on the front end. Students sometimes write half of a paper and realize they didn’t think it through and have to start from scratch.

So please let us help. The registration link is posted in the weekly newsletter: SSW Update. We are open during the academic semesters.

Also we recommend signing up in advance because we fill up especially during midterms and finals, which will be here before you know it! So coordinate when your papers are due and sign up with us before then.

We are so looking forward to meeting the next lineup of New York social workers!
