Commencement 2021 Message from Dean Mondros

March 19, 2021

Dear Graduating Students,

As you learned earlier today from an announcement by Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis, the University commencement will be in-person with all ceremonies held outdoors. The School of Social Welfare’s commencement ceremony will take place on Friday May 21st at 9:00 am outdoor in LaValle Stadium. We ask you to please save the date. As always we will follow all health and safety guidelines established by New York State to ensure a safe in-person celebration of SBU’s Class of 2021!

The ceremony will be live streamed.  Due to New York State mandates, families and friends will be able to attend virtually rather than in person.

We know how challenging the past 12 months have been for you, academically and personally. You have remained committed to your studies in the pursuit of your life’s goals. I have never for one moment doubted your resilience, commitment, and courage. At graduation, you embody the bravery and determination of the greatest social workers -- Jane Addams and Whitney Young.

We are excited to recognize and honor our graduates in person this spring. You can find more details about commencement plans here: https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/commencement/

The School is also creating animated stickers for our social media to be used as we begin the countdown to graduation. If you would like to submit a "one-liner", quips, notable professors, standout moments or quotes that can be captured in one sentence, please submit here by Tuesday, March 23: https://socialwelfare.stonybrookmedicine.edu/news-events-commencement

Plans to celebrate and recognize the academic achievements of graduating students are ongoing and we will regularly send you updated information.

I wish all of you safe and happy holidays and a rewarding and productive conclusion to the spring semester.

Sincerely,

Jacqueline B. Mondros
Dean & Assistant Vice-President for Social Determinants of Health
