NYS Social Work Student Legislative Action Day in Albany

March 2, 2016 - On March 2, more than 50 BSW, MSW and Doctoral student's along with faculty from the School of Social Welfare, joined close to 600 social work students from around the state who gathered in Albany  to advocate for legislation that is relevant to the social work profession.  Social Work Student Legislative Education Action Day (LEAD) is the annual NASW Chapter event that brings hundreds of social work students and professionals to the State House. The goal of this event is to further social workers’ knowledge about policy issues in substantive areas of social work practice, teach participants about legislative advocacy, and provide an opportunity for social workers to lobby on behalf of specific legislation. A legislative briefing on this year’s advocacy issues included funding for the NYS Social Work Loan Forgiveness Program and Raising the Age of Criminal Responsibility, followed by legislative visits with officials from Long Island government offices including Assemblyman Phil Ramos (D-Brentwood).

The event was sponsored by the NASW-NYS Chapter, NYS Social Work Education Association and the NYS Association of Deans of Schools of Social Work.
