Second Year MSW Student Awarded a CSWE MFP Fellowship

Student Spotlight: Katherine De La Hoz, 2nd Year MSW Student

"My interest in social work began within my community where I served as an advocate to many Spanish speaking families. Soon after getting my Bachelors in Psychology at Brooklyn College, I worked in the child welfare sector for about four years. Enrolling in Stony Brook's MSW program, I went out of my comfort zone and worked with a new population- veterans. Last year, I had the my field placement at New York City Department of Veteran Services where I provided supportive services to recently housed veterans as well as assisted with research on Crisis Intercept Mapping for Suicide Prevention for veterans in the Queens community. This year I’m interning at the CUNY Office of Veteran Affairs, which supports and assists active, reservist, retired veterans and their dependents with their academic goals. My goal after graduation is to obtain my LCSW and continue to work with the veteran community in order to assist with their transitional phase from military back to civilian life. I encourage other MSW students to go out of their comfort zones and explore the different opportunities that this field has to offer." ~ Katherine De La Hoz
