Phi Alpha Honor Society is a national honor society for social work students dedicated to excellence in scholarship, humanitarian goals, and high professional standards. The National Council of Phi Alpha Honor Society granted membership privileges to the SBU School of Social Welfare effective August, 2015. 

The eligibility requirements for our chapter of Phi Alpha (Phi Theta) are as follows:

                        General requirements: Writing a statement (maximum of 250 words) identifying 20 hours of community service within a one year period. Activity occurring within the confines of your internship, if applicable, is not eligible for consideration. Examples of such activities would be attendance at the LEAD Day in Albany and any on-campus club or student government involvement, volunteer work in a school, religious institution, community program, etc.

                        Undergraduate requirements:

·         Achieved Senior status in The School of Social Welfare

·         Achieved an overall grade point average of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale)

·         Achieved a 3.75 HSC grade point average

·         Demonstrated commitment to University and/or community services for a minimum of 20 hours per academic year

Graduate requirements:

·         Completed three terms or equivalent of course work in The School of Social Welfare

·         Achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.9 (on a 4.0 scale)

·         Demonstrated commitment to University and/or community services for a minimum of 20 hours per academic year

Doctoral requirements:

·         Completed a minimum of two terms of course work and successful completion of the comprehensive exams

·         Achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.8 (on a 4.0 scale)

Applications are due no later than March 18, 2024 and Acceptance decisions will be determined on or around April 15, 2024. Upon acceptance candidates are required to submit a check in the amount of $75 no later than April 29, 2024. This provides you with a lifetime membership to the Phi Alpha Honor Society, a personalized medallion (for your graduation attire!), and membership certificate. Please note that attendance to the Phi Alpha Honor Society, Phi Theta Chapter Induction Ceremony will be held at 6:00 pm on Friday, May 10, 2024.
