Little Treatments, Big Effects? Building Brief Interventions to Reduce Youth Psychopathology at Scale

Despite progress in the identification of effective youth mental health interventions, up to 80% of youths with mental health needs go without services each year. Even among youths who do access care, many drop out prematurely, and few receive empirically supported interventions. Thus, there is a need for scalable youth psychological interventions—especially programs deliverable beyond brick-and-mortar clinics and via nontraditional means to maximize accessibility. This talk will introduce new developments in research on mechanism-targeted, single-session interventions for youth mental health problems. Given their low-cost, brevity, and flexible delivery format, SSIs hold especially high potential for disseminability. Evidence supporting the promise of youth SSIs will be reviewed, including walkthroughs of web-based SSIs designed to reduce youth depression and anxiety; promote hope and agency; and increase families' receptivity to mental health treatment.
