Addiction Professionals MSW Award
The Addiction Professionals MSW Award is a partnership between the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) and Stony Brook University’s School of Social Welfare that offers funding and education to students interested in becoming a member of the addiction workforce.
Through this unique blend of education and practicum experience, students are provided the opportunity to meet the requirements that lead to obtaining the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) certification after graduation.
The primary goal of Stony Brook’s Addiction Professionals MSW Award is to prepare masters-level students to enter the addiction workforce after graduation as both an MSW and a certified addiction professional.
Students who receive this award agree to embark on a designated pathway of education and practicum experience that qualifies them to take the exam to become a CASAC upon graduation. The Addiction Professionals Award Program is open to both Foundation and Advanced year students.
Since the program’s educational pathway leads to a direct practice credential (CASAC), students must be enrolled in or agree to enroll in the Integrated Health (IH) or Families, Youth, and Transition to Adulthood (FYT) specializations in their Advanced Year to participate in
this program.
Participating students will enroll in both of Stony Brook’s addiction electives (HWC 545 and HWC 546) to meet the educational requirements of the Addiction Professionals MSW Award Program.
Students will also need to enroll in and provide proof of completion for the following OASAS trainings that are available for free and online:
- Cannabis Use Disorder: Diagnostic Criteria and Assessment
- Ethics for Addiction Professionals
- Harm Reduction
- Opioid Overdose Prevention
- Person-Centered Care
- Supporting Recovery with Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT)
Stony Brook will provide participants with practicums at OASAS, OMH, or DOH licensed/ funded/certified agencies that will offer opportunities to learn and practice the 12 core functions of an addiction professional required to become a CASAC. Students must complete all hours of these assigned practicums as a core requirement for receiving this award. The award amount is a total of $9,240 for at least 462 hours of practicum successfully completed in the Fall and Spring semesters.
The Director of Addiction Education selects the Addiction Professionals MSW Award recipients. Each recipient must complete all requirements to receive the full award and to be eligible to take the CASAC exam upon graduation:
- Enroll in Stony Brook’s addiction electives (HWC 545 & HWC 546) as an IH or FYT student.
- Provide proof of completion of external OASAS online training.
- Successful completion of all requirements for 2 semesters (462 hours in total) of practicum education at an OASAS, OMH, or DOH agency.
