Stony Brook University is leading an innovative network of regional biomedical-research facilities pursuing breakthroughs across the healthcare spectrum that will impact and advance clinical care for many physical and mental health conditions.

Professor George Leibowitz is the Module Lead for Community Engagement Network for Translational Science (CENTS) within the Long Island Network for Clinical and Translational Science (LINCATS), of which he is a member of the executive committee. LINCATS is a collaboration between Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Northport VA Medical Center.

CENTS addresses the disconnect between medical researchers and the community; translates knowledge into real-world settings by eliciting the perspective of community-based organizations, cultivates investments with community-based organizations and integrates community representation within LINCATS via a Community Ambassador program that includes tribal communities, a Community Advisory Board (CAB), and various linking services including membership in protocol development.

The mission of LINCATS is to serve the people of Long Island by focusing on health equity, build a more nimble research infrastructure, and promote community engagement through outreach, education and training.

“The launch of CENTS brings together various disciplines which offers a more complete picture of why social and health disparities develop and how we can affect solutions when we integrate knowledge across fields and include our community stakeholders,” said Dr. Leibowitz.
