What inspired you to pursue your MSW degree?
At the age of 38 years young, I decided to follow the footsteps of my brother, Guillermo Sandoval (Stony Brook MSW Alumni Class of 2016) and enroll at Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare. He is my hero and I admire him for his service in the Marine Corps and to the Hispanic community by way of his civic duties. As immigrants from Chile, we have always been thankful for the opportunities in education that this country has provided us.
I am also very inspired by my sons Frankie and Tommy who, since their birth in 2013 and 2015 have changed the course of my life. I hope to be a part of making Long Island a more inclusive and diverse place for them. Of course, I am thankful and inspired by my husband Daniel who has always made me see the world from a state of constant flux and change. He has always supported my passion for learning.
Is there a particular area of specialization that you are pursuing?
Currently I am focused on Housing and the opportunity to create a bridge between my passion of being a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson and my commitment to the Disability Community. I hope to broaden the availability of Housing for all people and also educate the general public about the importance of a home for everyone.
Are you currently in a field placement? and if so, is there anything that has surprised you in your role as an intern? And standout experiences you'd like to share?
My current field placement is at S.T.R.O.N.G Youth Inc. located in Brentwood. This organization has the opportunity to incorporate Social Work workshops and lessons at West Middle School. Ironically enough, when I moved to this country at the age of 9 years old I was a student at Brentwood East. This experience has led me full circle to now work with youth who I truly connect with. It’s such an invigorating experience for my soul as I get to be a light in someone’s shadow and put my classroom knowledge into a space that will flourish. As an intern I respect this organization and admire their effort in community building and in creating spaces and services that are essential for the grown of our youth.
Do you have advice for prospective students considerin
For any prospective students of Social Work I would first admit that this is a passion of the heart and being benevolent, empathetic and open to learning is important. This profession will test you in many ways and it is not for the faint at heart. I would implore anyone thinking about pursuing this career choice to really focus on the learning experience and respect the process. We have amazing faculty and leaders who are here to watch you succeed and while you may encounter challenges ahead, it is a great way to truly prepare for the real world. I believe Social Workers can heal the world and together we are Stony Brook strong!
Lastly, I would like to thank my classmates who always keep me in check and focused. They will become your source of strength and ability to keep moving forward. I look forward to our graduation and to go out there and make the world a better place!
